Grade 5 Express

(November Edition)

What amazing costumes we had in our class yesterday. The kids were excited for Hallowe’en and enjoyed the school wide contests that took place. Congratulations to James who won the colouring contest for the junior division. Way to go James!

Math

In math the class has been working on Number Sense and Numeration. In this unit students have been learning about reading numbers from 1-999 999 aloud, ordering numbers from least to greatest up to 999 9999, deciding if numbers are equal then, less than or greater than another number, using place value to represent, add, subtract numbers, recall multiplication and division facts, writing numbers in expanded form, written form, and standard form, adding 4-digit numbers by 4-digit numbers, adding 3 sets of numbers, writing and solving word problems. Check out the class blog to see examples and to access websites to help your child to further study/practice these concepts J.

Language Arts

In language arts the class has been reading Body Works in the Literacy in Action textbook. They have read about the heart, the lungs, bones and muscles, skin, and germs.  This unit aligns perfectly with our Science unit, “Body Systems”. Students have taken notes about the facts they have read about and used these facts to create webs in class. This information has been transformed into class notes that will help students to study for their Science test.

The class has also been writing stories. They are working on their Hallowe’en story. The class used a dice to roll a number from 1-6. This decided the character, setting, and problem for the story. Check out the blog to see the worksheets. The class is finishing typing the good copy of their stories. They have completed a self and a peer edit of their work. The students can’t wait to share their stories!

Science/Technology

The class enjoyed using the “Germ Kit” from the Health Unit. They were able to see how effectively they washed their hand. They can also identify the ”hot spots” in our classroom where germs “hide” out such as on door handles, taps, their desks, and light switches.

The class enjoyed their trip to, “Green Legacy”. Students worked hard to transplant trees, put trees into cells, and take other trees out of cells and into crates. They learned about different species of trees and what they need to grow. They went on a nature hike and learned about the habitats of many species living in the forest. Check out the blog to see pictures of our amazing day!

The class is also getting ready to pilot the “All About Me” online program. When this is ready to launch further information will be sent home. There will also be an online class website called D2L. The class will gradually be introduced to this resource/interactive learning environment. All students will need to be able to independently access their school email/Google Docs. We will be working on this during our technology days and computer lab days. More information will be sent home when the class is ready to access the D2L site.

Health/Phys. Ed.

The trip to Zehrs was successful. Students enjoyed the tour of the store and were able to provide the dietitian with many examples of food from each food group in Canada’s Food Guide. The class played a scavenger hunt where they read food labels and learned about the best value for food by reading the unit price of each item and comparing two items to see which was healthier or the best value.

In term 1, we will continue to explore reading food labels and comparing healthy eating options. The class will participate in a Dairy presentation. The focus will be on reading food labels. This presentation will take place on Monday, November 21st.

In phys. ed. we have finished our soccer unit. We will be learning about volleyball next. Students will learn how to serve, bump, volley, and return passes.

Religion/Fully Alive

In Religion we are learning about why we are each “God’s Work of Art”. Students are able to describe what makes them unique and can identify that other people have traits that make them unique and special too. In our classroom community we are all different and have talents that we can share.

Students will also be learning about Anti-Bullying this month. They will describe the bully, the by-stander, and the victim. Students will be creating skits in class on anti-bullying.

Picture Day- Friday, October 21st

Smile! Picture Day is this Friday!

Green Legacy Trip

What a beautiful day we had for our Green Legacy trip. The class worked hard and in the first hour transported 5000 saplings from their cell containers into crates. They then put them in the green house. Later in the afternoon the planted saplings into cells for continued growth. We finished off with a nature walk through the 200 acre forest. Students learned about various habitats and plant/tree species.
Thanks to Ms. Seneses, Mme. P, and Mrs. Martin who joined us on the trip.

Hallowe'en Story

The class is writing a Hallowe'en story. In class they rolled a number cube (dice) to determine the character, setting, and problem. They are using graphic organizers and a 4-square to brainstorm 5 ideas for each section. They also have a section for their "razzle dazzle" (descriptive words). They have Hallowe'en spelling words to assist them with ideas and proper spelling in their story.
As a class we created a writing rubric. The curriculum expectations were put into "kid friendly" language that students could understand.
Students will have the opportunity in class to use computers to publish their "good copy" of their writing.

At the Park with Our Reading Buddies

On Friday we went to the park with our JK/SK reading buddies. The class played on the equipment, raced, played "Duck, Duck Goose", and enjoyed the beautiful weather.

Rocks Curling

On Friday, the class had the opportunity to experience an "iceless" curling lesson. They learned how to sweep, throw a rock, how to score, and the lingo of curling.
Check out our class in action!
