Random Acts of Kindness

In our classroom the “Golden Rule” is key, it is what guides us. Jesus taught us to treat others the way that we would like to be treated. In doing so, a lot of hurt feelings can be avoided and it makes our classroom a place that people want to be.

We are working on a project called “Random Acts of Kindness” and #KINDNESSMATTERS. Each student will have an envelope with their name on it. They will have a Q-card inside where they will keep track of various random acts of kindness that they do each day. It is the class goal that each student will perform 5 acts of random kindness since they are in grade 5 by the end of September.

How will this work? As a class we have discussed and brainstormed different ideas for what a random act of kindness might look like. Students can use these ideas to help them to perform a random act of kindness. Some examples include: picking up garbage off the floor/keeping the classroom neat without being reminded, asking a student to play with them if they are sad or lonely, holding open the door for someone, smiling and saying “hello”, helping someone when they are hurt, being polite and using manners, saying: “please, thank-you, pardon, excuse me”, standing up for someone who is being bullied, helping someone pick up things that they drop, giving someone a compliment, etc.

We have a class bulletin board that we will display the random acts of kindness. Students will 1) pick a random act of kindness, 2) make a positive impact on someone’s life, 3) post a picture. If you are able to take a picture and send it to school with your child’s random act of kindness that they performed outside of school that would be fabulous. If you and your child read about a random act of kindness in the paper or on the Internet, you could also send the article to school to add to our bulletin board.

I want to encourage students to live the “Golden Rule” each day. I want to celebrate the wonderful acts of kindness that our children do each and every day.
