What's Been Happening in Grade 5?

During the past week the class has been busy learning classroom/school rules and routines. They have been working on: "Getting to Know You" packages, writing an "All About Me" booklet, creating a "Selfie" story, reading class and library books, making a #FIRSTDAYOFSCHOOL post, discussing what random acts of kindness are, identifying them and acting them out, learning how to logon to the computers using their new user names and passwords, making s'mores and much more. It has been an exciting start to the school year.
This week we have begun the Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA). This is a reading assessment that assists in identifying students strengths and areas of need in order to set goals for term 1 in reading. The first unit it Math is about patterns. Students are learning to identify, create and explain growing, shrinking, and repeating patterns using various operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. They are also learning new math vocabulary: input/output machine, operation, alternately, and pattern rule. In Science, students have explored the textbook for the unit on the Human Body Systems and will create a title page for the unit. In Art they are creating pieces of art using maple leaves that will be displayed in the St. Joseph School Fall Fair exhibit this weekend. Stop by the school exhibit to see your child's artwork.
We are also very fortunate to have 2 volunteers (both of whom are former teachers) in our classroom, Mrs. Boyd (Mrs. Small's mom)  and Mme/Nellie (Sienna's grandma). They will be assisting students in small groups in language and math.
Thank you to all the parents for signing and returning all of the forms that come home during the first few weeks of school. It is greatly appreciated. The permission form for the Plowing Match for is due Friday. Tomorrow is our first "Device Day". Friday is the first school mass. It will be at 9:30am.
